The Met Gala 2026 was less red carpet, more walking into a living museum after dark. It was clear from the first time celebrities started arriving at the Metropolitan Museum of Art that this year would be all about spectacle. While “Fashion Is Art” could have been a costume disaster, most stars took the theme as a challenge to come up with something theatrical, emotional and impossible to ignore.
Costume Art, the Costume Institute’s accompanying exhibition, nudged stars toward references from sculpture, portraiture, surrealism and anatomy. Some were dramatic. Some were romantic. Some looked very unrecognizable. And that, to be honest, is what the Met Gala should be. It ought to be overwhelming. It ought to seem strange. This should keep the internet buzzing for hours.
This year's gala raised a record $42 million and somehow the carpet itself looked like it cost half of that. Mossy green steps, garden textures, live performances, couture that looked painted on skin and celebrities arriving dressed like moving installations. And even the quieter looks had a strong point of view.
These were the styles that created the most buzz at Meta Gala 2026.
1. Beyonce

Beyonce made a comeback at the Met Gala after 10 years and looked stunning in a crystal-encrusted skeletal illusion dress designed by Olivier Rousteing.
The dress featured diamond-like “bones” across sheer fabric while a dramatic fur train trailed behind her like something from an opera stage. Could have been gimmicky, but the styling made it elegant. The icy makeup, platinum curls and silver crown gave the whole look a regal feel rather than costume-esque.
It was theatrical and glamorous and impossible to forget about.
2. Rihanna

Rihanna arrived fashionably late in a heavily embellished Maison Margiela gown by Glenn Martens that almost looked molten under the lights.
The metallic texture, crystal beading and sculptural silhouette felt luxe and dramatic without being heavy. Beside her A$AP Rocky’s pale pink coat added softness to the whole visual.
Rihanna always knows how to balance. The beauty look was understated to keep the gown in the spotlight.
3. Hailey Bieber

Hailey Bieber showed that simple can still feel dramatic. Her Saint Laurent gown was a deep cobalt blue, with a sculpted gold chest piece and gave her one of the cleanest silhouettes of the night.
The cape behind her flowed and gave movement without overwhelming the dress. Everything was sharp and sleek and incredibly polished.
The slicked back hair made it feel futuristic rather than soft.
4. Kendall Jenner

Kendall Jenner wore a cream Zac Posen gown inspired by classical statues with soft sculpture.
The draped fabric and exposed corsetry provided structure to the look but it still felt romantic. The neutral palette made every fold and detail pop.
It felt elegant without trying too hard which honestly worked in her favor.
5. Emma Chamberlain

Emma Chamberlain wore one of the most artistic gowns of the evening in Mugler.
The dress looked hand-painted, with yellow, blue and deep green tones flowing across the fabric like brush strokes on canvas. The dramatic textured train made it more striking from a distance.
This was one of the few looks that embodied the theme “Fashion Is Art” without being verbatim.
6. Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway looked like she stepped out of an old fashion illustration. The black-and-white gown had these drawn figures across the fabric that almost looked hand-sketched from afar, especially when the cameras caught the folds moving.
I liked that she didn't go overboard with anything else. Hair back, very little distracting jewelry, very clean makeup. The dress already had plenty going on. She probably would’ve messed up the balance if she’d put more in it.
7. Ashley Graham

Ashley Graham wore one of those dresses that makes more sense the longer you look at it.
The first time I saw the Di Petsa gown, it looked almost half-finished, twisted mesh and sheer draping, but that was kind of the point. It felt soft, a little undone almost like fabric being wrapped around the body in real time.
8. Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman went full old school glamour, which honestly worked perfectly for her.
The deep red Chanel dress was covered in sequins and feather details but it was the hair that really sold it. But the long, straight blonde hair gave the whole thing a very classic movie star dramatic feel.
The dress also shifted its hues under different lights. Sometimes red, sometimes nearly burgundy.
9. Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian usually goes for something extremely body-focused at the Met Gala, so this felt slightly different for her.
The bronze sculpted piece almost looked like armor from certain angles, especially with the metallic finish catching the flash photography. Then the softer draped fabric underneath stopped it from feeling too harsh.
It was still very much a Kim Kardashian look, obviously. Just toned down a little compared to some of her past Met Gala outfits.
10. Chase Infiniti

Chase Infiniti wore one of the loudest looks of the night and somehow made it work.
The Thom Browne gown was covered in swirling colors and sequins that looked different every time the cameras flashed. It genuinely looked like someone turned an abstract painting into a dress.
The huge natural hair balanced everything out too. Without it, the dress might’ve completely taken over. Together it felt chaotic in a way that actually fit the theme really well.
Meta Gala 2026
The best Met Gala years are the ones where people fully commit to the fantasy and 2026 absolutely did that. Some celebrities looked like sculptures. Others looked painted by hand. A few looked almost impossible to process at first glance.
And honestly, that’s why this carpet still matters.
For one night, fashion stops trying to be practical and becomes performance art instead.
